October 1. 96. 0In the sleepy township of Mayberry, North Carolina the Sheriff/Justice of the Peace Andy Taylor is just about to join citizens Wilbur and Rose in holy matrimony. During the wedding, Opie makes it known that he objects to the marriage because he feels that it means that Rose doesn't love him anymore. Into Rose's place comes Andy's Aunt Bee who is leaving her lonely spinster life to live with Andy and Opie full time, yet there are objections from Opie who sees Aunt Bee as an interloper who will never live up to all the things that Rose was in his life. All attempts to prove the Aunt Bee isn't needed fail and so do Andy's attempts to make her more accessible to Opie, like teaching her to fish and play baseball. The last straw however comes when Opie discovers that his bird Dickie is missing from his cage because Aunt Bee left it open while cleaning it. Finally Aunt Bee decides that it would be best to just leave, but Opie has a change of heart, deciding that she will be nothing without the important skills of baseball, fishing and frog hunting, that he is the only person who can teach her these important skills.
In the end, he excepts Aunt Bee; Dickie returns, and Andy plays a tune on the guitar. All is well. 1. 0 October 1.

Andy and Opie are out fishing when they discover that their boat has sprung a leak. Arriving back at the shore, they find Barney who has news that the State Police want to set up a dragnet in Mayberry to catch Dirkson, a dangerous convict who has escaped from State Prison. Andy and Barney are surprised to find that the mission to catch him is no small affair, but a full- scale operation. But they are even more surprised when they discover that the State Police are leaving them completely out of the proceedings. It's not by accident, Captain Barker, the man in charge who is a dead serious, by- the- book type who doesn't take too well to Andy's laid- back manner. When he informs Andy and Barney that they are not going to be part of the manhunt, Andy determines to set up a dragnet of his own.

Knowing the town and countryside intimately, he and Barney set up a trap after he breaks into Emma's house and hold her at gunpoint by letting it slip that his boat is docked on the shore of Myer's Lake. Dirkson sets out across the lake which springs a leak forcing him to swim back to shore right into the hands of the State Police. October 1. 96. 0Andy is happy to once again arrest wayward guitar player Jim Lindsey on a charge of disturbing the peace - he was playing illegally on the public street - because it means that he and Jim can play a duet while Jim is behind bars. Yet, after hearing a stellar performance of "New River Train", he begins to wonder if the young prodigy isn't squandering his gifts, and reasons that he could be bigger than "that fella we see every now and then on television, shakin' and screamin'." Jim, however, is reluctant and claims that he isn't quite ready. Then an inspiration comes rolling through town in the form of Bobby Fleet and his Band with a Beat, a traveling band on their way to a gig in Raleigh. Andy suspects that the band could use a good guitar player but setting up a meeting is a bit tricky since Jim isn't willing to play and Fleet isn't willing to listen. So, he uses the law to set up a meeting, arresting Fleet on an illegal parking charge and instructing Barney to bring Jim in for questioning (although what kind of questions is never quite worked out).
Angry that he's been cornered into playing for a man who is forced to listen, Jim refuses while Fleet agrees and begins mocking the kid's potential talent - which he hasn't heard. His ego threatened, Jim launches into a brilliant rock and roll solo that quiets Fleet's doubts. Impressed by his talent, he offers Jim a job with the band - which is leaving in 1. October 1. 96. 0Andy and Barney drive Aunt Bee uptown to do some shopping but Andy is surprised to find Walker's Drugstore closed in the middle of the day. She is Elinor Walker, a pharmacist who has come to take care of the place while her uncle Fred is under the weather. Her first customer is Emma Brand who requests her usual pills for the usual 1. Ellie won't give them to her without a prescription. Emma tries a variety of tricks and guilt trips to get the pills but they all fail and she ends up sick on her couch.
Andy gets angry with Ellie and tries to comfort Emma as does everyone else in town who brings food to their ailing friend. In a surprise turn of events, Ellie has a change of heart and brings Emma the pills anyway. When Andy questions why she changed her mind, Ellie explains that the pills are a placebo, sugar pills that have no medicinal properties at all.
Yet, Emma thinks they are keeping her healthy which is why Fred had been giving them to her without a prescription and why he sells them to her for only 1. Ellie says that by not giving her the pills she was becoming the town pariah and that she realized her mistake by overlooking the human equation. The pills seem to work, Emma feels better and all seems to be alright, except that after eating all the food that the townsfolk brought by, Emma comes down with a case of indigestion and really does end up bedridden.
October 1. 96. 0Andy stops by Walker's Drug Store one morning and is shocked to find that Ellie doesn't have a date for the upcoming Church Dance. Her Uncle Fred says it is because no one has asked her yet and prompts Andy to be the first. After some hemming and hawing he finally gets the words out and asks her, to which she happily accepts. Arriving back home Andy begins to play the incident back in his mind and then begins to suspect that he may have been roped into asking her by means of a trap set my Fred and Ellie. While talking to Aunt Bee, he begins to put together a series of conspiratorial theories leading to the conclusion the Fred and Ellie are starting him down a road leading to matrimony. Feeling that two can play this game, he sends three eligible bachelors (dopes really) into the store to try and lure her away. It backfires, first when Fred chases the men off and then when Opie comes in and tells Ellie blabs about Andy's plan.
She retaliates by taking Barney to the picnic even though he never even asked. Andy appeals to Barney's sense of duty by making him see that his job as a deputy is more important than taking Ellie out on a date. Feeling bad for all that has happened, Andy tries to apologize to Ellie and then legitimately ask her to the picnic, but it seems that she already has another invitation, from Opie. Not to be outdone, he asks Ellie if he can escort the two of them anyway. November 1. 96. 0After giving Opie a lesson on trust, loyalty and keeping promises, Andy learns that "Tex", one of his son's playmates, is a runaway from a nearby town who Opie promised he wouldn't tell on.
Opie is confused when Andy expects him to break his word and give him the boy's last name. Andy must find a way to reunite the boy with his worried parents and show a disappointed Opie that sometimes breaking your word is the best thing to do. November 1. 96. 0While working on the squad car, Andy sees an angry Barney storm past him and into the courthouse. Catching up with him inside, he finds Barney removing his deputy trappings while declaring that he's quitting the force because he was teased by Opie who wrote an unflattering poem about him on the wall of the bank. Opie comes by and explains that some older kids wrote the poem but who ran away when they saw him coming. Still dejected Barney is determined to quit until pretty Miss Rosemary comes by and boost his confidence - it seems that Barney has been walking her to church on Sunday.
His confidence slightly renewed, Barney decides not to quit. In the spirit of trying to boost his confidence even further, and to give him some police work, Andy pretends that there has been a robbery at Walker's Drugstore. He figures that Barney will be on the project for quite a while since there's no criminal to catch, but then Barney brings in a suspect named Tracy Crawford. Andy checks the man out and finds that he must drop the charge of robbery in order to extradite him because he wanted back in Chattanooga. Barney is tickled pink, and that's when Miss Rosemary comes back, but while Barney hesitates, Andy asks her out. Barney gets upset that Andy is muscling him on his potential mate and shyly asks permission to court her. She accepts, and Barney's confidence is once again a big Ten- Four.
November 1. 96. 0Annabelle Silby, the chairwoman of the Underpriviledged Children's Charity Drive drops by the jailhouse to talk to Andy about serving on the Fund Soliciting Committee. During their conversation, Annabelle admits that the Charity fills her time as she has been lonely the past two years since her husband Tom went to Charlottesville and was run over by a taxicab, yet Mayberry's proudest widow won't admit that he was a drinker. Even further she informs Andy that in collecting money for the charity at the school, Opie only gave three cents.
Confronting Opie about his lack of giving he tries to explain the nature of giving, but Opie explains that he only gave three cents because he's saving money to buy something for his girlfriend Charlotte. Sending Opie home to think things over, Andy is shocked when he is suddenly confronted by Tom Silby himself, alive and well. It seems that he and Annabelle had a huge fight and he left for Charlottesville, but after a few years he thought things over and began to miss her.
